Komputer IBM Berhasil Kalahkan Otak Manusia

Di sebuah restoran di New York, suatu siang pada 2004. Manager riset IBM, Charles Lickel, yang sedang makan siang dengan koleganya di sana, heran bukan kepalang karena tiba-tiba restoran itu sunyi senyap.

Setelah tanya sana-sini, mafhumlah Lickel bahwa biang keladi itu semua adalah Ken Jennings. Para tamu rupanya sedang menonton kepiawaian ilmuwan komputer asal Washington itu di sebuah kuis bernama Jeopardy! .

Jeopardy! adalah kuis televisi, yang para pesertanya mesti mengartikan apa yang tersirat, berbagai ironi, teka-teki, dan petunjuk-petunjuk rumit lainnya. Jennings rupanya berhasil memenangi 74 game pada kurun 2004-2005 dan mengantongi hadiah senilai US$ 2,5 juta.

Eureka! Di benak Lickel langsung muncul ide brilian. IBM, menurut dia, mesti menciptakan mesin komputer yang mampu mengalahkan otak Jennings setelah kesuksesan Deep Blue, komputer IBM lain, mengalahkan Gary Kasparov dalam sebuah pertandingan catur pada 1997.

Pada Februari lalu, tepatnya tanggal 14-16, IBM berhasil mengadu sistem komputer buatannya, yang bernama Watson, dengan Jennings dan Brad Rutter, jawara Jeopardy! lainnya. Hasilnya, komputer IBM menang.

Watson adalah sistem komputer spesialisasi tanya-jawab. Mesin ini berbasis server IBM Power7 dan peranti lunak tanya-jawab IBM DeepQA. Piranti lunak ini diciptakan untuk mampu menganalisis bahasa yang rumit, memberikan jawaban yang tepat atas petunjuk, seperti di Jeopardy!. Semuanya dilakukan secara bersamaan, dalam kecepatan tinggi, dan menganalisis informasi secara real time.

Adapun mesinnya terdiri atas 90 server IBM Power 750 termasuk tambahan input/output, jaringan, dan node pengontrol cluster dalam 10 rak. Total core atau intinya adalah 2.880, dan RAM-nya mencapai 16 Terabita.

Tiap server memakai delapan core prosesor dengan kecepatan 3,4 GHz dan empat thread untuk tiap core-nya. Proses kerjanya dilakukan secara paralel, yang cocok untuk DeepQA.

Peranti-peranti lunak Watson dikerjakan dengan bahasa Java dan C++ serta memakai sistem pendistribusi file Apache Hadoop, framework Apache UIMA (Unstructured Information Management Architecture), serta sistem operasi SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11.

Watson mampu memproses data sebesar 500 Gigabita per detik. Ini setara dengan Anda membaca sejuta buku dalam satu detik.

Keberhasilan Watson, yang diambil dari nama pendiri IBM, Thomas J. Watson, tak tercipta dalam waktu singkat. Pada 2005, Paul Horn, eksekutif di Badan Riset IBM, menyambut baik ide Lickel. Namun ide itu tak ubahnya seperti tantangan.

Tantangan itu jauh lebih rumit ketimbang permainan catur yang tak membutuhkan kata-kata. Sedangkan Jeopardy! adalah justru permainan kata-kata dan ide. Horn kemudian dibantu David Ferrucci, Manager Senior di departemen Semantic Analysis and Integration IBM, untuk mewujudkan mesin itu.

Sebelum Watson, lahir Piquant. Namun komputer ini hanya berhasil menjawab 35 persen kata kunci dan sering membutuhkan beberapa menit untuk merespons. Padahal, untuk menang di Jeopardy!, peserta harus merespons dalam beberapa detik saja.

Watson kemudian lahir. Dalam sebuah tes pada 2006, ia hanya mampu menjawab 500 kata kunci dari beberapa episode Jeopardy! sebelumnya. Tim Ferrucci, yang dibantu 15 orang lainnya, kemudian diberi waktu 4-5 tahun untuk mencoba memecahkan persoalan itu. Pada Februari 2010, mesin Watson anyar akhirnya sudah mampu unjuk gigi di Jeopardy!.

Pertarungan sebenarnya terjadi setahun kemudian. Melawan dua jawara Jeopardy! sekaligus, Watson membuktikan kepiawaiannya mengalahkan kompleksitas otak manusia.

Untuk sampai ke puncak, Watson harus menjalani latih tanding sebanyak 50 kali melawan para jawara Jeopardy!. Anda tahu, Watson juga menjalani tes awal untuk menjadi calon peserta, seperti kontestan yang lain.

Catherine Cook mengeluh soal pilihan foto di buku tahunan sekolahnya saat ide jejaring sosial muncul. Mendirikan Myyearbook.com selama enam tahun, perempuan ini sia bersaing dengan Mark Zuckerberg.
Siapa yang tidak mengenal Mark Zuckerberg. Pria berusia 26 tahun yang menempuh pendidikan di Harvard University saat menciptakan jejaring sosial Facebook dengan lebih dari 500 juta pengguna. Kini, ia punya pesaing.

Catherine Cook bersama dengan saudara laki-lakinya, David, menciptakan situs jejaring sosial menggunakan komputer di kamar tidurnya selama enam tahun. Ia berhasil merebut perhatian 25 juta pengguna di Amerika Serikat. Bahkan, Myyearbook.com merupakan salah satu dari 25 situs terbaik di AS.
Berusia 21 tahun, perusahaan Catherine dengan 12 pegawai pengembang perangkat lunak ini memilikinilai sekitar US$20 juta (Rp 180 miliar). Kesuksesannya seringkali dibandingkan dengan pendiri Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg.
“Ini terjadi begitu cepat. Satu menit, kami saling bertukar ide kemudian menerima investasi sebesar US$250 ribu (Rp 2,2 miliar),” ujar Catherine yang kini mengemban ilmu di Georgetown University.
Berbicara soal inspirasi, Catherine mengakui ia awalnya tidak menyukai buku tahunan mereka. “Suatu hari di 2005, saya dan saudara lak-laki saya, David, saling bercerita soal betapa bencinya kami atas foto di buku tahunan itu.”
Selanjutnya, C menjadi semacam buku tahunan online yang membuat seseorang dapat berinteraksi dengan orang lain berdasarkan lembaga pendidikan mereka.
Catherine dan David meluncurkan situs itu dari rumah mereka di Skillman, New Jersey, Amerika Serikat, setelah merekrut tim pengembang dari Mumbai, India. Kini, perusahaan mereka pindah ke ruangan lebih besar di kawasan perkantoran di New Hope, Pennsylvania.
